Frequently Asked Questions
About Poças
History, family and tradition since 1918.
Poças is a Portuguese family-owned producer of Port Wine and DOC Douro wines, founded in 1918 by Manoel Domingues Poças Júnior. It is one of the rare Port Wine companies that was born Portuguese and has remained in the hands of the same family for over a century — regarded as "the most Portuguese side of the history of the Douro."
Today it is managed by the 4th generation of the family: Maria Manuel Maia (Winemaking & Viticulture), Paulo Pintão (Administration & Finance) and Pedro Poças Pintão (Sales & Marketing).
The Poças headquarters and Visitor Centre are located in Vila Nova de Gaia, at Rua do Visconde das Devesas, no. 186 — in the historic centre of Gaia, a short walk from Devesas train station. The cellars and physical shop have been open to the public since 2016 and were fully renovated in 2018.
Yes. Poças owns three quintas (estates) in the Alto Douro Wine Region — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — totalling 100 hectares, of which 76 hectares are under vine production:
- Quinta das Quartas (Fontelas, Baixo Corgo) — home to the winery and an ageing warehouse with ~25,000 hl of Port Wine.
- Quinta de Santa Bárbara (Ervedosa do Douro, Cima Corgo) — old vines that yield some of the finest DOC Douro wines in the house.
- Quinta de Vale de Cavalos (Numão, Douro Superior) — at 520 m altitude, schist and granite soils, wines of great freshness and minerality.
Yes. Poças is committed to rational use of natural resources: hedgerows, ground cover maintenance and pest control using livestock. The Numão and Ervedosa estates hold integrated production certification since 2013. Sustainability is a core value of the company.
Our Wines
Ranges, styles and characteristics of Poças wines.
Poças produces two main categories:
- Port Wine — Ruby, Tawny, LBV, Colheita, Vintage, White and Aged Indications (10, 20, 30, 40 Year Old).
- DOC Douro wines — whites, reds and rosés, from entry-level to single-vineyard and special editions.
Main ranges: Poças Clássicos, Coroa d'Ouro, Tongue Twister, Fora da Série and Special Editions.
The Fora da Série range represents the most creative and experimental side of Poças — innovative DOC Douro wines developed by Head Winemaker André Pimentel Barbosa. It includes single-vineyard wines, alternative winemaking styles (orange wine, cold-smoked, and others) and blends of lots carefully selected over several years. Limited editions for those who enjoy discovering the Douro from unexpected perspectives.
Yes. Poças offers a selection of vegan-certified wines, identifiable by the V-label logo on the back label. You can filter by "Vegan Wines" in the shop to see all available titles.
Both are Port Wines aged in wooden casks, but they differ in composition:
- Tawny with Age Indication (10, 20, 30, 40 Year Old) — a carefully blended lot of wines from different harvests, with an average age corresponding to the stated indication.
- Colheita — always from a single harvest year, aged in casks for a minimum of 7 years before bottling. The year appears on the label and reflects the specific character of that vintage.
Poças offers an exclusive personalised Port Wine service — ideal for gifts, corporate events or collectors. It allows you to create a bottle or lot with a custom label. Browse the "Custom Port Wine" collection in the shop or contact us directly for more details.
Product images are representative but may differ slightly from the item delivered — particularly with regard to vintage and label design. Products are also subject to availability. If any item is out of stock at the time of your order, you will be contacted immediately.
